The best place to be based is near the marina and the city’s famous canal in Otaru, on the island of Hokkaido. Several tour operators provide boat excursions to this attraction with some journeys beginning from the historical Otaru Canal. The cruise can take around 80 minutes, transporting you out to sea and through the Niseko-Shakotan-Otaru Kaigan Quasi-National Park.

The Type of Boats

Generally, the vessels will be open boats that provide unobstructed views of Ishikari Bay and the Sea of Japan; this setting is picturesque indeed and, in fact, an ideal option would be to stay at Otaru-based hotels in Hokkaido, Japan located right beside the marina overlooking the bay. If there’s rainy weather around, boats with a cabin will be used, though you can still get some great pictures.

Of course, the highlight of the trip would be to enter the intriguing Blue Cave; true to its name, the waters within the cave are mesmerising blue in colour and what’s more, the use of underwater lights in the darkest parts makes the whole spectacle even more spellbinding. Some tour operators will also include a visit to the “Dragon Cave” making for an adventure-filled day out.

A trip to the Blue Cave also comes with the chance to see and encounter fascinating wildlife. A common sight on such a trip are seagulls and some tour operators will even give you a chance to feed them too! On your journey, also be on the lookout to spot everything from sea lions to dolphins during the season, swimming wild and free.
